Love your (updated) signage designs - wish they really would implement them in the real world.

I think you'd be interested to know that in the beginning, the 4 different MRT directions each had a different color, the East line was green, the West line was blue, and if I remember correctly the South line was red while I forget the North line.

I always thought that was a better way of distinguishing the lines from each other. In the past, when asked about directions, all I had to tell a complete stranger was say; 'get on the green line.' Now it's 'look for the green line, but going east.'

I always hoped they would bring it back, but ah well.

Love your work on gothere.sg too, by the way. It's the best looking Web 2.0 app done in Singapore that I've ever seen. It's wonderful to see a designer that not only has a firm handle on aesthetic, but also thoughtful user experience.

I'm glad that you are now here in Singapore contributing to our success.
Sweden is notable for it's people involvement in REAL trade union so I might understand your confusion of the apparent distasteful Bus stop sign.
You see prior to 1993 the bus stop sign are much more simplistic and to the point.
But soon they realized that the public transport is a profitable business so they decides to do 2 thing:- raise fare and break single journey into such that you need to make multiple transfers to get to your destination.
Thus the confusion that ensue and is still fomenting even now.
The word for it is "clueless". As they drove luxury cars and need not take the transport used by the citizens.
And yes your idea is good but will they implement it?
That is the burning question.

I think a big problem we have in Singapore is that we have too many bus stops. I find in other countries the distance between bus stops tends to be bigger, so it's easier to identify them, give them unique names etc.

We didn't use to have the bus routes at bus stops, which was a big bitch. Luckily we do now.

Our transport signages and information systems needs alot of improvements, suggesting them to the proper authorities have been quite difficult. It's like stepping on their toes, I have not heard them respond something like 'it's a good idea, we will look into it". Instead they will, ignore, argue it out or say that they are working on it. I have a lot of inputs which I would like to contribute. I will list them out later in point form and hope that you people can help to convince the proper authorities to implement them if they are good. Who should I email it to. On 26th July Mr Tan Kin Lian suggested many good ideas which appears in the ST forum page. There is also a reply to his letter today from SMRT.

Excellent, Mr. Jussi.

I had a discussion with another local sometime back after he wrote an article, lamenting about how unstandardised signages are in Singapore, among other things. Your ideas are almost the perfect solution for it - I see it needs only a few refinements to fit into some of the idiosyncracies of Singapore's bus network. I hope you can get to talk with some of the people at LTA and get your ideas implemented.

Hi Jussi,

Very interesting concept! I'd sure like it to be implemented here in Singapore...

Even as a local, I have to spend so much time looking through the routes to find out how to go to where I want to go.

Kudoz!

Jussi,
great design - very clear and also aesthetically pleasing.
have you thought about also re-designing the info panel on bus schedule and bus route at the bustops. those are pretty disastrous too ;).
